My drawings are an important and intrinsic part of my response to the subject matter and I use them to develop and formulate my ideas. The paintings themselves seem to evolve both from the response to the paint and through re-inventing and developing the imagery.  It feels a natural journey but my work, although apparently abstract, nevertheless reflects the essence of the image or subject underlying the outward visual perception. I try to include the unseen geology of a landscape; the key features of a Romanesque archway, etc., so although the work is from observation, the development though not conscious, has a resonance of the subject or place which to me is important.
